EN 81-20/50 and UCM in modernizations: what the board must do
Which EN 81-20/50 and uncontrolled-movement (UCM) functions the BR50, BR200 and BR400 documentation lists, and which error code appears.

Short answer: according to MoviLift's documentation, the BR50, BR200 and BR400 boards do four things related to EN 81-20/50 and UCM. They enable the EN 81-20/50 safety functions with parameter C12. They supervise uncontrolled movement of the car (UCM, which the documentation also calls "A3"). They block movement when they detect access to a reduced pit or headroom, until a key reset. And they monitor the car-door-closed contact (CPP) and the landing locks. Every anomaly is logged with an error code.
This article describes what MoviLift boards do according to their documentation. Which requirements apply to a specific modernization depends on the project and is decided by the responsible technician: it does not replace the text of the standard.
What the board covers
Function | How the board implements it |
|---|---|
EN 81-20/50 safety functions | Enabled with parameter C12. |
Access to reduced pit or headroom | The shaft-access and pit-access inputs block movement and require a key reset. |
Uncontrolled car movement (UCM / "A3") | Supervised by the board; anomalies are logged with codes 104 to 110. |
Car door closed | Monitoring with the CPP / APG contacts. Options include a retractable skate and door pre-opening. |
Compliant positioning | The manual describes the configuration of the absolute selector with the BR-ENC board. |
The same compliance text appears on the BR50, BR200, BR400 and BR100 pages.
UCM: what the board checks and which code appears
Code | What it detects | What to check | Boards |
|---|---|---|---|
Err 104 | UCM redundancy test procedure not performed (per the BR400 documentation: on hydraulic lifts, within 24 h, because of a missing CS contact) | The CS contact, and run the test procedure | BR50, BR200, BR400 |
Err 105 | Uncontrolled movement, brake switch BR1: active during travel or not active at rest | Brake switches | BR200, BR400 |
Err 106 | Uncontrolled movement, brake switch BR2 (BR200: active during travel or not active at rest; BR400: active during travel) | Brake switches | BR200, BR400 |
Err 107 | BR1 and BR2 active during travel | Brake switches and brake micro-switches | BR200, BR400 |
Err 108 | BR1 and BR2 not active at rest (BR400); "A3" uncontrolled movement (BR200) | Brake switches | BR200, BR400 |
Err 109 | Levelling or re-levelling while valve V1 is energised | Valve V1 and its control | BR50, BR200, BR400 |
Err 110 | Levelling or re-levelling while valve V2 is energised | Valve V2 and its control | BR50, BR200, BR400 |
On the BR50 only codes 104, 109 and 110 appear, that is, the test and the hydraulic valves. On the BR200 and BR400, codes 104 to 110 appear.
Doors and safety circuit: related codes
Code | What it indicates | What to check |
|---|---|---|
Err 138 | Car door safety contact test (CS input), on BR200 and BR400 | That the contact works and has not been bypassed or tampered with |
Err 139 | Landing door safety contact test, on BR200 and BR400 | That the contact works and has not been bypassed or tampered with |
Err 200–231 | Landing door lock; the code gives the floor (for example, 201 is floor 1) | Door safety contacts and locks |
Err 240–250 | Safety module error during levelling (BR400) or re-levelling (BR200) | That the safety module works |
Err 103 and 134 | AR input not active, or error during levelling or re-levelling | That the safety module works |
Checks at commissioning
List drawn from the remedies given in the documentation; the full procedure is in each board's manual.
- Enable the EN 81-20/50 functions with parameter C12.
- Check the shaft-access and pit-access inputs and the key reset.
- Check brake switches and micro-switches BR1 and BR2 (codes 105 to 108).
- On hydraulic lifts, check valves V1 and V2 and run the UCM redundancy test procedure (codes 104, 109 and 110).
- Check the car and landing door safety contacts and that they are not bypassed (codes 138 and 139).
- If an absolute selector is used, see the manual for the configuration with the BR-ENC board.
If you are replacing the whole controller
MoviLift's complete controllers also state in their documentation that they implement the EN 81-20:2020 / EN 81-50:2020 safety functions: Hydraulic Controller, Geared VVVF Controller and Homelift & Platform Controller.
Which board to choose
The documentation of the three boards lists the same EN 81-20/50 functions. The choice depends on stops, speed and inputs and outputs: BR50, BR200 or BR400: which board to choose for a retrofit compares them on datasheet values.
Frequently asked questions
What is UCM?
It is uncontrolled movement of the car. In MoviLift's documentation it appears as "uncontrolled movement" and also as "A3".
Do the BR50, BR200 and BR400 comply with EN 81-20 and EN 81-50?
Their documentation states that they implement the EN 81-20/50 safety functions, enabled by parameter C12.
What does the board do if it detects access to the pit or reduced headroom?
It blocks movement and requires a key reset.
Which codes point to a brake problem?
Err 105 to Err 108 on the BR200 and BR400, related to the brake switches BR1 and BR2.
What does Err 104 mean?
That the UCM redundancy test procedure was not performed. According to the BR400 documentation, on hydraulic lifts the test is done within 24 h and fails if the CS contact is missing.
How are fault codes read?
On the BR50, BR200 and BR400 faults appear as "Err" followed by a number, for example Err 104 or Err 110. The full table is in each board's PDF manual, which can be downloaded from the documentation: each code has a description and, where the manual gives it, a cause and a remedy. Each board's "Docs" page also lists the codes with a documented cause and remedy: BR50 (10), BR200 (29) and BR400 (30).
Where are the manuals?
On the documentation page and on each board's "Docs" page: BR50, BR200 and BR400.
